All American TrailersTrailer used truck market in the U.S. - An overview

There are thousands of suppliers and buyers of truck trailers used routinely buying and selling of trailers used in the United States. American Trailer Exchange, a distributor based in Atlanta truck trailer, said that the secondary (used) market semi-trailer is approximately 400,000 units per year, equivalent to over three billion dollars in sales. dry vans, flatbed, refrigerated vans and trucks are the majority of this material.

Trailers have a useful life of at least twenty years. They are generally traded several times during their life when they spend long distance, regional characteristics, the use of local truck, and finally to a service custody. A general rule is that the trailers are put on sale every five years, then used indefinitely as storage units. Average annual new trailer shipments were approximately 250,000 units. Trailers have a variety of specifications and configurations that determine their use and segments on the market to purchase.

Used Truck Trailer sources of supply: The supply of aftermarket trailer is somewhat fragmented, with no national organization of the distribution system. There are only a few suppliers trailer used with a national scope. The trailer used truck market is composed of trailer manufacturers that take trade-ins for resale, the public and private carriers who are used to sell surplus equipment to dealers, leasing companies and equipment banks that re-sell their assets at the end of the lease through their asset management services and a small number of firms that buy in large quantities from trucking companies and the national team to redistribute the 'through brokers, and over 1500 dealers and equipment dealers that serve the regional market areas. No single member is over a 5% market share. Market fragmentation often results in inefficiencies in the market for equipment through the original seller to brokers, dealers and other intermediaries before reaching the end user.

Types of companies contributing to the supply chain tow trucks:

1. Manufacturers of trailers: There are over 100 manufacturers of truck trailers in the sale of United States, on average, 250,000 new trailers per year. The top 10 manufacturers account for more than 75% of total sales. Trailer manufacturers have always been an important source of trailers on the secondary market because they are often invited to take used equipment on the market to sell new units. In recent years, however, manufacturers have gone from active player participating reluctant because of their need to recapitalize the manufacturing operations. The recapitalization was completed by the closure of branches of plant for the deductible (usually non-exclusive) dealers, and refusing to take certain trade packages, or offering a lot less for them. Most manufacturers have reduced the staff of the service used a trailer to one or two employees who rely heavily on dealers to purchase this equipment.

2. Trucking Companies: Trucking companies are composed of public and contract carriers. the carriers are available to shippers on a rental basis for shipments from one piece to several carloads. Contract carriers dedicate equipment and drivers for shippers on an exclusive basis. According to Transportation Technical Services (TTS), there are more than 27,000 trucking companies registered in the United States and Canada. Except for large companies, the truckers do not specialize in the sale of their equipment. Sale trailers excess fleet is mostly the responsibility of the Maintenance Manager. The main objective of the maintenance manager is to purchase and maintain tractors and trailers. Since its performance is based on the will and the cost of fleet operation, liquidation of equipment is not a priority, so he relies heavily on the expertise of the dealers.
